ALTHOUGH we all seem to reminisce about hot summers of the past perhaps they were not always as warm as we recall.
Here we see rain falling on a summer fete at the National Children’s Home, Edgworth Branch at Crowthorn School in June 1939.
The opening ceremony of the fete was performed by Mrs J Baron, who was chairman of the Lancashire Association of Girls’ and Mixed Clubs.
The first party of 24 children arrived at the Edgworth Home in 1872.
That was the beginning of a fascinating history of a children’s home that later became Crowthorn Special Needs Residential School in the 1940s.
The idea behind it was to care for children in small family groups with a head of the house.
There are many children who have memories of living at the school — which became a children’s home — including famous actress Shirley Anne Field. Do you remember the school? Get in touch with Gayle McBain on 01204 537269 or gayle.mcbain@nqnw.co.uk
