GIRL Guides from Bolton received an unforgettable surprise after being recognised for their volunteering efforts.
The women were named as some of 75 ‘Guiding Idols’ in a campaign led by Girlguiding North West England, a charity that gives young girls and woman the chance to fulfil their potential.
The five women; Jayne Carman of the 82nd Bolton (St. Andrew’s, Blackrod) Brownie and Guide Unit, Patricia Dunbar of the 16th Bolton (St. Maxentius, Bradshaw) Guide Unit, Wendy McCann of the 53rd Farnworth (St. Saviour’s) Brownie and Rainbow Unit and Susan Walsh of the 71st Bolton (St. Simon and St. Jude’s) Brownie Unit and 44th Bolton (St. Simon and St. Jude’s) Guide Unit and Suzanne Spencer were chosen by members who were asked to nominate someone that they thought had been an inspirational role model.
Suzanne Spencer, who leads 40th Bolton Brownies, said after being nominated: “I feel very honoured and surprised to have been chosen as one of the 75 Guiding Idols.
“For me, Girlguiding is all about great memories and building life-long friendships."
After being nominated, each Guiding Idol was then invited to attend a special celebration afternoon last Sunday at Girlguiding North West England’s Region Headquarters in Preston.
The event included thought-provoking activities, a chocolate masterclass for the Guiding Idols and an afternoon tea with a sweet twist.
Amid the celebrations, the volunteers received a Region Thanks badge from the Region Chief Commissioner, Julie Bell, and had yet another surprise when a plaque was unveiled in the Region Headquarters’ garden – a memorable tribute that named all 75 Guiding Idols for their achievement.
Julie Bell, regional chief commissioner at Girlguiding North West England, said: “Once again, we’ve had a fantastic response to the Guiding Idols campaign and we’re looking forward to doing it all over again next year.
“We wanted to thank our volunteers for all the hard work and effort they put into Girlguiding and with the support of our young members, we’ve been able to celebrate our amazing volunteers in a really memorable way.”
