ON Sunday your Bolton News will be 150 years old. The first edition of the daily newspaper was published on March 19, 1867.
And this weekend we will be celebrating in true editorial style with a special Sunday edition of The Bolton News, a 150 years special supplement.
It will be packed with features, including photographs from Bolton’s history, contributions and profiles of the 11 editors, a nostalgic look at Bolton in wartime, headlines over the decades, and much more besides.
Many of our former writers have contributed stories of their working lives at the Bolton Evening News, including former editor Les Gent, Bolton Wanderers correspondent Gordon Sharrock and Bolton Evening News sports editor, Peter Mensforth.
All this week, radio station Bolton FM has been featuring news about our special anniversary and interviewing key members of staff on their morning show. Tomorrow, Mr Sharrock and Mr Mensforth will be special guests at Bolton FM at noon on This is Bolton.
The pair have legendary stories to tell of their many years reporting and editing on Bolton Wanderers, the weekly Buff and the sporting scene across Bolton.
They will be sharing just a few of them on the radio as a taster for the stories they have to tell in the 150-year anniversary supplement that will be on sale from Sunday.
Later tomorrow, Bolton FM will join former editorial staff of the Bolton Evening News when they meet for a reunion at the Hen and Chickens pub in Deansgate, recording the banter as they share their memories.
On Friday, the current editor of The Bolton News, Ian Savage will visit Bolton FM to be interviewed on the mid-morning show at 10.30am on Mid Mornings with Andrew and Phil.
Mr Savage will be talking about life at The Bolton News and the hugely valuable role it plays at the heart of the Bolton community.
On Sunday, The Bolton News offices at Wellsprings, Victoria Square, will be open for a short time during the day so that readers can join us for a piece of celebration cake, and to give you the opportunity to snap up a copy of the anniversary supplement.
It will be on sale for just £1 and will also be available at your usual news outlet. Direct delivery customers will need to buy a copy from a newsagent, or from our offices.
So don’t miss out, tune in to Bolton FM to catch the stories of life at your local daily newspaper.
And make sure you snap up a copy of our anniversary supplement on Sunday.
