SHOUTS of "disgraceful" greeted a decision to develop a professional cycling track in Leverhulme Park.

Planning bosses narrowly voted — 11 to nine — to approve the controversial track in the popular green space.

Lauren Bailey-Rhodes, who lives near the park, spoke against the application, telling councillors about the strength of the opposition against the plans as well as stating that the track doesn’t meet British Cycling standard, there would be inadequate parking facilities, an increase in anti-social behaviour and an impact on wildlife.

Speaking after the meeting, she said the fight would continue and campaigners against the cycle track were feeling positive, despite the knock-back.

She said: "We are obviously really disappointed but we have got a good feeling hat common sense will prevail.

"I think the council is underestimating the opposition against the proposal and will work with us about considering alternatives.

"It is not over and we have got the backing of nearly half the chamber."

Councillors also heard that keen cyclists currently had to travel out of the borough to use such facilities, that the track would be run in conjunction with local cycling clubs, and that interest in the sport had grown.

Cllr Paul Richardson said: "I stood in the middle of the this wonderful green space which has been enjoyed by residents, and I thought it beggars belief that someone would want to tar on top of this."

Cllr Debbie Newall, also a local ward councillor, said there were concerns over parking issues.

She said "I commend the application and the wonderful facility to offer the people of Bolton but it is the wrong place to put it."

Many other councillors supported the creation of a cycling track but questioned the location, with Cllr Norman Critchley taking issues with the application containing an evaluation of other sites.

Cllr Bob Allen said that the track would destroy the park by splitting it in half.

Cllr Nick Peel, who supported the application, however, said: "This has clearly divided the community, people on both sides are very passionate about Leverhulme Park and sporting facilities."

He added there would always be issues surrounding such applications.

Cllr Peel said: "My personal view is the loss outweighs the benefits."
