YOUNGSTERS showed they knew their onions — as they were filmed taking part in a healthy eating regime for a popular children's show.
Pupils at Devonshire Road Primary School were filmed to appear on Newsround as part of a feature about healthy eating.
A group of six children were picked by the broadcaster to appear in the show, which is expected to be aired in the next few days.
The children were tasked with keeping a food diary for a week to check up on their foot habits, in light of reports that the government is considering introducing a sugar tax to combat the country's obesity crisis.
However the children at the school in Heaton were given the green light by health experts, who said they were living a healthy lifestyle.
Danyaal Ali and Georgia Worgan, both aged 11, and 10-year-olds Adam Klipanovic, Luke Vickers, Zara Dillon and Josh Taylor all took part in the filming, joined by presenter Ricky Boleto and nutritionist Amanda Ursell.
Pam Barnes, headteacher of the school, said: "The children were really excited to be part of the programme, and to meet the presenter of one of their favourite shows.
"We were approached by the BBC to take part in the show and picked the group of six, who were asked to keep a food diary at home as well as in school.
"They returned the results to the BBC and the nutritionist who went through the findings, and said that the children were pretty healthy.
"They asked the children not to do anything different from their usual routine, which they did. They found the children had the occasional treat, but in the main they ate the right things and were healthy.
"We were glad to be involved because healthy eating is an important part of the school which children learn about in class."
