ATHERTON Collieries will play Bacup Borough away in the third round of the Men United Cup after beating Litherland REMYCA 2-0 on Friday night.
Goals from Mark Battersby 20 minutes from time and an 89th-minute clincher from Dave Sherlock saw the North West Counties League Premier Division side progress at the expense of their mid-table First Division visitors.
They are the only local non-league side left in the competition after First Division second-bottom Daisy Hill went out following a 4-0 home defeat by Premier Division visitors Cammell Laird Cammell Laird 1907 on Saturday.
In the league, Atherton LR are now just one place and one point above Daisy Hill after the Crilly Park men were leapfrogged by Northwich Manchester Villa following a 3-0 home defeat to them.
