TWENTY-TWO local primary schools gathered at Bolton School to take part in a five-a-side football competition - the Crusader Cup.

Teams competed for three cups: an A Team, B Team and Girls' Competition.

The afternoon was fun but competitive and there were some very close games.

The girls' final was a 0-0 draw between Brownlow Fold Primary School of Bolton and Lostock Primary School, with the two sides sharing the cup.

The Boys' B team final was shared by Brownlow Fold Primary and Devonshire Road Primary of Bolton.

The A team competition was won by St Philip's Primary School of Atherton who overcame Clarendon Cottage of Eccles 1-0 in a very tight final.

The competition has been running for several years now and is refereed by the sixth form football teams. It is organised by Bolton School's soccer coach, Keith Branagan, who made 263 appearances as Bolton Wanderers' goalkeeper in the nineties.

l Bolton Under-15s have finished runners-up in the Greater Manchester Schools League.

The local lads have hit top form in the league this season under the guidance of rookie manager Liam Carr who has steered them to second spot, just two points behind champions Salford.
