A BABY boy seriously burned after stumbling into a gas fire is set for more surgery but is "getting better" according to his uncle.

Little Hamzah Darvesh, aged 14 months, suffered severe burns to his legs and chest on Thursday morning when his clothes caught light after he fell against a fire at his home in Wolfenden Street, Halliwell.

He underwent surgery at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital in Pendlebury on Thursday and Saturday, and is due to be operated upon again on Monday.

His uncle Osman Ali, brother of the boy's mother Sufaiya Darvesh, who has not left her son's side since the accident, said: "Hamzah is getting better.

"He had more surgery to replace his skin on Saturday but it's a long process so they stopped and they said he will have more surgery on Monday.

"When I saw him he was moving his hands and was better than I had expected.

"It's a tragedy that this has happened but all we can do now is hope and pray and leave it the doctors because he's in the best hands."

Mr Ali is looking after the family's three other children: Yasin, aged 13, Naeem, aged 10, and Nazira, aged eight.

He added: "They are missing him because he is the only baby in the family."
