A CAMPAIGN to extend flexible working hours to include all parents and carers has been backed by Bolton South-east MP Dr Brian Iddon.

Dr Iddon welcomed legislation, that comes into force tomorrow, which increases maternity leave from six months to nine and gives working carers the right to request flexible working.

But he has also signed an early day motion supporting calls by shopworkers' union USDAW to extend the right to flexible working further still.

"I am asking employers in Bolton to look favourably on any requests for changes in working hours from carers they employ," said Dr Iddon.

John Hannett, USDAW General Secretary said: "Labour originally introduced the right for parents of children under six.

"That has proved to be a big success and employers understand that it helps them attract high quality employees who would otherwise be excluded because of childcare commitments."
