EDGWORTH captain Guy Haynes is not getting carried away by his side's good start to the season.

The Bolton Road men have won four of their five games so far and sit second in the table just one point behind reigning champions Flixton.

Before the season began Haynes dismissed his side's chances of winning the title and set a target of top six.

And while he has been impressed with Edgworth's start and believes they can get better he remains realistic in his assessment.

"We have had a good start," he said. "I'm pleased with the way the games have gone – four wins and a last-ball defeat to a side who have also started very well.

"It's a start and that's all I would say at the moment. We need to keep ticking games off, picking up as many wins as possible."

Haynes says an important element to the good start has been keeping the same side week in week out, something he believes will be key to their fortunes this season.

"We have a fixed core of 12 very good players, with some good players challenging behind that," he said. "We have only used 13 players so far this season in the league which is a complete contrast to last season.

"Our team for Worsley on Saturday means we will have gone three games in a row where we have been unchanged. That in itself is a major factor.

"If we can go through the season and only use 14 or 15 players we should do very well.

"The team has gelled well, and the new faces have settled very nicely indeed. It's a really good dressing room and there is a genuine determination to achieve something this season.

"There are no expectations over where we are going to finish but let's keeping winning games and if we are in contention at the start of August, we'll reassess then."

Haynes went into the season confident his side's bowling would be strong but was concerned over whether they would score enough runs.

They have had little trouble so far with the bat, while the bowlers are starting to show what they can do.

"The bowling unit is starting to find its rhythm and the batting unit is functioning really well," he said.

"Five batsmen have made 50s already and others, right down to nine, have made match-changing contributions. I'd like to see more really heavy scores but people seem to be contributing when needed which is a good sign."

"Young Josh Fallows has been our best bowler so far, but recently Gareth Williams, who was our best bowler last year, Chris Tye and pro Chris Read have started to find their rhythm, We are bowling much more as a unit now.

"Last Sunday we hit the right lines and lengths and put the opposition under concerted pressure from start to finish, probably for the first time."

nWinton have become the second club to resign from the Bolton Association to join the Greater Manchester League, following Astley and Tyldesley.
