THE Bolton Golf Association took on the might of the Sheffield Union at Turton last Sunday for their annual contest and brought home the Shefton Trophy for the first time since 2010 when they met at Doncaster.
Bolton’s team captain, Bill Bromilow was delighted with the 10–8 result.
He said: “It is time we gave the Tykes a beating and our players did their utmost to contribute.
"The 3½-2½ score-line after the morning foursomes gave us a good start and when Callum McPhillips and Mark Latham produced two wins toward the end it was in the bag.”
Harwood’s Stirling brothers, Anthony and Ian, produced the first win in the foursomes and were followed by Mark Latham (Hart Common) and Joe Whittaker (Great Lever) with a superb 6 & 5 and Aaron Watkinson (Old Links), who partnered Mark Millhouse of Bolton, produced an excellent 7 & 6.
The 2014 BGA champion, Liam Ball (Turton) led the home team in the singles and beat Sheffield’s Neil Stones 4 & 2.
Another BGA former four-time champion, Gareth Hastie of Bolton, also managed a 4 & 2 score to defeat Sheffield’s Joe Cartlidge and the scene was set.
Josh Ashton (Bolton) held his own with Sheffield’s Gary Fullwood finishing all square while Andy Brindle (Turton) had a great match and produced a significant 4 & 2 win.
In the final stages Bolton held their breath as four of the remaining singles went to Sheffield but a win from Callam McPhillips (Turton) and a superb 7 & 6 win from Anthony Stirling was followed by the BGA Secretary, Mark Latham who put the match in no doubt with a 1-up victory over Sheffields team captain, Richard Hodgkinson.
