Band name: Doug Perkins and The Spectaculars
Members: DB Spectacular, Slim Spectacular, Doug Perkins, Chet Spectacular
When and where did you form? 2013 in The Dog Inn, Whittle-le-Woods, Chorley
What is your sound and who are your influences? Taking inspiration from the pioneers of rock 'n' roll, we are an authentic, four piece, rock 'n' roll/rockabilly band based in the North West.
Recreating the unique sound of the 1950s, we emulate the greats from Presley to Perkins and Cochran to Cash.
Harking back to a time when the size of the turn ups on your jeans and how much grease you could pile in your hair determined your stature, we bring you a mixture of our own original material, authentic '50s covers and modern songs with a rockabilly vibe!
With our roots embedded in the raw and unique edginess of the 50s rockabilly sound, we leave those run of the mill bands in a steaming wreck of molten skinny jeans and singed “Barbour” coats.
What is the biggest gig you have played to date?
We have played many great gigs at great festivals including Darwen Live, Headlander, Blackthorn Music festival, etc, but the highlight would be the two gigs we have been asked to do in Guernsey for Specsavers and their CEO Doug Perkins from whom we got our name and our first headline show at Chorley Little Theatre which sold out.
If you are not already, is it your ambition to become professional?
Oh yes, we all love playing music and to do it professionally would be a dream.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Still proving that rockabilly ain't dead. Just on a bigger scale.
Is there anything unusual or interesting about the band?
Originally we were called the Spectacles as we all wore glasses but we decided we wanted a more fifties sounding name like Rory Storm and The Hurricanes or Bill Haley and The Comets so we picked The Spectaculars.
All we needed was a name so we looked up the CEO of Specsavers and found Doug Perkins. A great 50s sounding name. So we became Doug Perkins and The Spectaculars. Everyone said it would be funny if he found out. Well he did and we were invited down to play at their annual party at HQ in Guernsey. So we wrote a song in return called Love is Blind.
