KYLE Jarvis was the star of day four as Lancashire romped to an opening week LV= County Championship win by 250 runs over Derbyshire at the County Ground today.
The ex-Zimbabwe Test fast bowler stunned the hosts with a burst of 5-10 inside his first seven overs as, chasing 365, they slipped from 77-3 to 105-8 in the blink of an eye.
Jarvis picked up three lbws, including home captain Wayne Madsen, before Derby were bowled out for 114 on the stroke of lunch.
The 26-year-old finished with 5-13 from nine overs, his best haul in a Lancashire shirt and his first five-for since March 2013 for Zimbabwe against West Indies.
Lancashire claimed 21 points to give the new management team of Ashley Giles as cricket director and head coach and Tom Smith as captain a win at the first time of asking.
“It was great to finish the game off like that and great to get our season underway in such a good fashion,” said Jarvis, who was making only his eighth Championship appearance for the county since joining in August 2013.
“It all happened pretty quickly. I was desperate to get the ball in my hand there, and luckily it worked out. I strayed a little bit in the first innings, and I knew I had to sort it out. That’s all I concentrated on, getting my lengths right.
“I never got going last season, and I’ve been desperate to help the team in any way.
“I got a few things wrong. There was a little bit upstairs, but I’m passed that now.
“It’s a fresh start. I just said ‘new season, new everything’.
“I came over with a bit of expectation coming from international cricket. I was expected to do well straightaway, and that didn’t happen. The pressure built. A lot of it I was putting on myself, but I’ve forgotten about that now.
“It’s a new season and time to get things right.
“The guys showed a lot of heart throughout the game. There were a lot of important stands. Alviro Petersen batted great, Al Davies had a great knock. It was a great team performance.”
Tom Bailey, who replaced Jarvis with the new ball in the second innings, also impressed with three wickets, including the first of day four.
