A family-owned jack of all trades construction company is looking forward to its fifth birthday with a record turnover and glowing praise for its work from the UK's largest supermarket chain.
Construction North West Ltd, based in Manchester Road, Westhoughton, was set up in June, 2002, in Altrincham by Sue and Phil Taberner, both of whom had previously occupied senior posts with construction giant Amec. The company moved to its Bolton base in 2004.
Mr Taberner, the company's commercial director, said: "In our first year the company turned over about £400,000 and we were running it from home."
Now five years later and having created two new divisions - CNW Contracting, which carries out specialist contracting and groundwork, and DC Electrical Contractors - the firm has bought the office next door to its existing premises as part of its expansion plans, which are expected to include a total turnover approaching £6 million and the taking on of 10 new staff, to add to its existing team of 25.
The company has a new order book of nearly £4 million, with a healthy existing portfolio of work, including building the new £1 million library in High Street, Daubhill for Bolton Council, a block of 37 apartments in property development hotspot Hulme Street in Manchester, two private residential contracts in Hale, and a high volume of contract work for schools across the North-west.
But one of the biggest coups came as they carried out work in a Tesco supermarket in Blackburn and the retailer retained them to carry out a series of refits.
Managing director Mrs Taberner said: "We had our people working through the night to make sure the job was done on time and with a minimum of disruption to the customers.
"Tesco was so pleased with the job that it gave us Blue status as a contractor, which is extremely rare. For a company as young as our in such a competitive market, it is a major boost."
The firm is now setting its sights even higher with a position on the NHS approved contractor list and more public sector work.
Mrs Taberner said: "The company will grow, because we have a team of experts in their respective fields, and that gives us an edge. "
