QUEEN Victoria celebrated her Golden Jubilee in 1887, and celebrations took place all across Bolton.
This picture shows Churchgate decked out in full regalia to celebrate the occasion.
While the parish church of St Peters remains, the battlemented arch is long gone.
On the right of the picture is the Star Inn which replaced the notorious Theatre of Varieties, one of Bolton's moral blackspots in the early years of the Queen's reign.
Next door was the Theatre Royal, whose builder and proprietor Mr Ellison was responsible for the wooden arch.
