THE Chadwick Orphanage, on the corner of Chadwick Street and Bromwich Street, The Haulgh, opened on December 7, 1874.
It cost £22,000 to build and was funded by Dr Samuel Chadwick, whose statue stands in Victoria Square.
Dr Chadwick's surgery was close to the spot where his statue stands. He funded several charitable projects for the people of Bolton. He died in 1876 and was buried at St Peter's Church.
The orphanage was demolished in 1963.
