RESIDENTS who live near an accident blackspot say new safety measures cannot come soon enough following yet another crash.

Two cars collided on Thursday, at around 6pm, causing chaos for rush hour motorists in Dicconson Lane, Westhoughton.

No-one was seriously hurt in the accident.

Work has already begun here to introduce traffic management measures costing £25,000.

Between January, 2001, and October, 2006, three people, including two children, were killed in accidents on the road.

Lorraine Jones, aged 36, lives in Dicconson Lane and was stuck in traffic for half an hour on Thursday evening.

She said: "The cars go too fast along that road. It is a wide road, but it has some dangerous bends.

"The new safety measures do not appear to be working yet and I think a speed camera is needed to make people slow down."

The new safety measures, include flashing speed limit signs, hatched markings, new cycle lanes and parking bays and the installation of a ripple print surface, which causes a vehicle to vibrate if the driver is going too fast.

Some measures, including the flashing sign and cycle lanes which narrow the road, have already been introduced.

A spokesman for Bolton Council said the ripple print surface would be laid over the next few weeks, weather permitting.

Westhoughton North and Chew Moor councillor Arthur Price said: "I have made my feelings on this road very clear - there have been a number of fatal accidents and something desperately needs doing and quickly.

"It is being done, it is just a shaame that it is not finished yet."
