THERE are plenty of arguments for and against being forced to wear a school uniform.

Many believe making pupils wear uniforms stifles individuality and can be expensive. Others, though, say it stops competition regarding who is wearing which brand of designer clothes and helps create team spirit and stimulate concentration.

The success of Withins School suggests that the latter argument is the winner.

Headmaster Phil Mather says the success of the once failing school, which was put into special measures by government inspectors, can be attributed in part to pupil's wearing uniform with blazers. He says this has instilled a pride in appearance which has transferred to their work and behaviour.

Uniform may not work for everyone, but it certainly has at Withins School.
