A FATHER battered his wife in front of their baby son, Bolton magistrates heard.

Wayne Gilbert, aged 33, of Breightmet Drive, Bolton, grabbed Sally Gilbert by her hair and dragged her across the kitchen floor at their home before stamping on her head.

The assault happened in the early hours of February 18, after the couple returned from a night out.

The pair, who have been married for six-years, got into an argument about feeding their 11-month-old son, who had been cared for by a babysitter while they were out.

Mrs Gilbert called the police and her husband was arrested. She suffered a nose bleed and swelling.

Gilbert, a Royal Mail worker, pleaded guilty to one count of battery.

Mike Ardern, prosecuting, said: "He says they had a good night and then he couldn't remember anything until the arrest. He'd had quite a bit to drink. He says his wife wouldn't lie and if she says he did it then he must have done. He was disgusted with himself."

Magistrates ordered him to complete 60 hours unpaid work and pay £43 costs.
