FRASER Jardine proved he can mix it with the seniors with an impressive relay debut.

The 16-year-old, pictured, is certain to be called up for Bolton Harriers' senior track team after a super run in the Haigh Hall Relays in Wigan.

The club fielded four teams, which involved four runners each tackling a hilly course of just under four miles.

The men's team finished third behind Salford and Blackpool, and the women's team fifth behind winners, Horwich.

The men got off to a strong start with Tony Valentine finishing third on leg one behind Salford's Kenyan athlete, Tarus Elly.

The 31-year-old recorded a time of 20mins 40secs, bettered by only four athletes on the day.

Valentine was followed by debutant Ales Drahokovpil (21.12), a 21-year-old Czech student who is expected to figure prominently over 800m this summer.

Running way over distance, he stuck to his task well, consolidating third before handing over to Andy Parker (20.12) and finally to Ian Bowles (21.27). This was a solid return for Bowles after a period out of the sport with a liver complaint.

The B team race saw the excellent run by Canon Slade pupil, Jardine, who moved up from 21st to 14th on leg three.

The women's team of Catherine Brogan (25.31), Liz Proctor (25.06), Lindsey Jones (30.58) and Katie Magee (26.15) were as consistent as the men, starting off in fifth and remaining in the same position throughout. Proctor was fastest for the club on her return.

Tom Lancashire's indoor track season ended last week in an anti-climax at the NCAA indoor Championships.

Despite having set personal best times over 3000m in the USA this winter, the pace was a little too hot for the 21-year-old to handle in a race won by Kenyan 5000m specialist Lopez Lomong in 7mins 49secs.

Lancashire's time of 8:10 was some way down on his best of 7:55. He has, however, ended the season ranked second in the UK to Britain's 5000m star and European Cross Conutry champion, Mo Farah, in a new event for him.

He will now return to his specialist events, the 800m and 1500m, fitter and stronger than ever for the outdoor season next month.
