LIFE in a retirement home need not be dull - and it never would be if all the residents were like Wally Wallis.

Tyldesley Little Theatre's excellent production of Hugh Janes' thoughtful comedy Two of a Kind brings the Grove Lodge Retirement Home to life.

The plot tells the story of anarchic character Wally - played to perfection by Frank Bowdler - who, following the death of his room-mate Potts, aims to make life as miserable as possible for stickler-for-the-system newcomer Major George Fairbrother, played by Mike Jeffries, who adds comic brilliance to his character.

Paul Ward's slick direction enables the action to move swiftly around the stage, cleverly designed by the busy Mr Bowdler.

Winnie Beattie adds some great comedy as home resident with a heart May and Andrea Peters is convincing as the scary matron.

You wouldn't want to step out of line with her in charge, but, despite the troublesome beginnings of their relationships, the characters eventually do, leading to an unlikely meeting of the minds.

Hugh Janes' clever writing enables the skill of the actors to shine through, with the ever amusing Frank Bowdler standing out.

There's nothing to be negative here about this warm production, except it would have been nice had some members of the audience refrained from constantly rustling their crisp and sweet bags.

The anti-authoritarian Wally would probably have disagreed with that comment, but Major George would have almost certainly concurred.

l Two Of A Kind is at Tyldesley Little Theatre until Saturday March 24. Tickets are available on 01204 655619
