AN asylum seeker ran across the roof of a car and ripped off its wing mirror - the culmination of a series of offences committed in Bolton.

Iranian, Mariwan Ali, aged 21, of Gibraltar Street, Bolton, spoke through an interpreter when he appeared before Bolton magistrates.

He pleaded guilty to a Bail Act offence after failing to appear in court on December 19 in addition to two counts of causing harassment, alarm or distress, one of criminal damage and a further charge of possessing drugs.

The court heard that a motorist and his young family watched in amazement as Ali caused the damage to their car in Settle Street, Bolton, on January 19, 2006.

Magistrates were also given details of his arrest on August 6, 2006, when he was seen swinging a leather belt and shouting, in St George's Road, Bolton, after being kicked-out of Ikon nightclub.

A bag of cannabis was found in his jeans pocket, which he told officers, was for personal use.

Ali was seen by police staggering along Gibraltar Street and picking a fight with a group of men on August 13. Officers said he was in a "drunken rage" and his behaviour could be heard from 40 yards away.

Sandra Richardson, prosecuting, said: "This is quite a bizarre set of circumstances."

Ali was given a conditional discharge for 24 months and ordered to pay £60 costs. Magistrates ordered that the cannabis be forfeited.

Sentencing, magistrate Ann Mangan said: "This is not a let-off."
