Twenty-four hours after putting six past the Edinburgh Capitals, Manchester Phoenix poured on the agony for the beleaguered Scottish club as they hit double figures on Thursday night in a 10-3 victory, with Derek Campbell hitting four.
With Phoenix resting Jason Wolfe in favour of back-up goalie Matt Compton, it was the visitors who struck first through Mark Lovell on a sixth minute powerplay. Phoenix levelled through Anthony Battaglia before Campbell bagged the first of his four to put the home side ahead in the 13th minute. Edinburgh tied the game through Kowalcyzk but Johan Molin restored the Phoenix lead shortly before the first break.
Campbell and Battaglia both tallied again in the second period to end the game as a contest and set themselves up for hat-tricks and leave the crowd wondering just how many the Phoenix might score.
Campbell duly completed his treble in the 45th minute with a superb left wing wrist shot into the top corner before adding his fourth and the Phoenix seventh on a 48th minute powerplay. KC Timmons continued his good recent scoring run with a n excellently taken short-handed effort and just 21 seconds later Simon Mangos tickled the twine for the ninth. Patrik Luza blasted a third consolation goal for the Scots Leaving Joe Miller to give the Phoenix their double-figure haul inside the final minute.
Matt Compton commented on his first full senior appearance: "I enjoyed the game, but was a little disappointed to conceded the opening goal. The speed of the game is so much quicker than in practice and I have to thank Jason for all the help he has been to me in training this year. The fans were great too, chanting my name before and at the end the game was really inspiring."
