A FATHER who subjected his girlfriend to domestic violence has escaped prison.

Craig Brightwell, aged 28, of Marlbrook Drive, Westhoughton, assaulted Melanie Thornton while the couple's three children were in the home that they shared.

Bolton magistrates yesterday heard how Miss Thornton sustained eye injuries after being pushed by Brightwell at their home, on December 11, 2006. He had been drinking.

Sandra Richardson, prosecuting, said: "She described the relationship as a violent one." She continued: "She is frightened to give evidence as is common in domestic violence cases."

The relationship has since ended, the court heard.

Brightwell - who has previous convictions for domestic violence against the same victim - pleaded guilty to one count of common assault.

He was given a four month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, and ordered to carry-out 150 hours of unpaid work.

He must also pay £100 costs and £80 compensation to Miss Thornton.
