BIG Sam and Lofty the Lion cheered on primary school youngsters as they tackled a series of physical challenges.

Eagley Infants in Bromley Cross held a sponsored agility day designed to raise money for school funds and encourage children to take part in physical exercise.

And teachers could not think of anyone better to inspire the youngsters than Bolton Wanderers manager Sam Allardyce and the team mascot Lofty the Lion.

The two stood by the sidelines and cheered the youngsters as they tested their balance and co-ordination on a series of mini obstacles courses.

Sam said: "Physical activity improves academic performance and keeping fit has many benefits, not just for those who want to go and have sports careers.

"Introducing children to the physical education at a young age also taps in to a talent they might have and encourages them to simply enjoy sporting activities and stay fit.

"The Olympic Games in London will hopefully inspire young people. It would be a sad state of affairs if this country came away with no medals."

Sarah Entwistle, physical education co-ordinator, said: "Using an agility course enables children to develop basic skills which they can use for any sport. The children have enjoyed the whole day."

Abigail Ward, aged five, said: "It was really good meeting Sam. I enjoy sport and today has been a lot of fun."

Joshua Kilburn, also aged five, added: "Sam made me laugh. I support Bolton Wanderers so it was great. I want to be a footballer."

The day raised £2,200 with more money still to come in.
