TEENAGERS rarely have the chance to spend £350,000.

But 15 and 16-year-olds in Bolton have handed out that sum to projects to help other young people after they were appointed to a grants panel by Bolton Council.

Hundreds of youngsters will benefit from projects as diverse as Thai boxing to help with quitting smoking, after 49 out of 77 applications were accepted by the teenage panel.

Louise Meyers and Emma Simpson, Bolton's Youth MPs, said that once the money was handed out, there would be greater opportunities for young people in Bolton.

"This scheme allows young people to be in control and make their own decisions on which facilities they want to see in their local communities," said Louise. "It's really going to make a difference."

Cllr Linda Thomas, Bolton Council's Executive Member for Children's Services, said the event was a celebration of young people's achievements.

"This is a superb example of young people getting involved in the democratic and decision making process and provides a positive image of young people in Bolton," said Cllr Thomas.
