A FISH stall is hoping shoppers will be reeled in by an enormous halibut.

The fish, which is an incredible eight feet long, has been on display at Grundy's stall in Ashburner Street market since Tuesday morning.

The whopper was caught off the coast at Aberdeen.

Susan Higgins who works at the stall was stunned when they were offered the monster from the deep.

He said : "I've never seen one this big - its massive. It weighs 97 kg."

The stall will display the fish until tomorrow morning when it will be chopped up and sold to restaurants.

Halibut is a type of flatfish from the family of the right eye flounders (Pleuronectidae) and lives in both the North Pacific and the North Atlantic oceans.

The largest Atlantic Halibut ever caught weighed an astonishing 282 kg and was 8.6 feet long. It was captured by a Rolf Larsen at Stamsund, Norway.

Halibut is highly prized and chefs recommend keeping dishes simple to allow the flavour to come through.

One suggestion is to pan fry it with king prawns, white wine, a splash of lemon juice and some spring onions.
