OLYMPIC champion cyclist Jason Queally led a two-wheeled parade to mark the opening of a pathway which links Bolton town centre with Horwich along one of borough's best nature trails.
The Chorley cyclist was also joined by dozens of ramblers and schoolchildren as the Middlebrook Valley Trail was officially declared open.
Thousands of pounds have been spent transforming the banks of the route to create six miles of pathways for walkers, cyclists and horse riders.
Queally won a gold medal in the one kilometre time trial event at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
Councillor Frank White, chairman of the Transforming Your Space board, which spent thousands of pounds on the project, said: "This is a fantastic walk through some lovely parts of Bolton which many people probably never knew existed.
"It opens the doors for people to get close to some of the nature that Bolton has to offer. This fund was set up by the Government to allow local authorities to make the most out of the land around them and that is exactly what we have done here."
