TRADITIONALISTS will be delighted Wanderers have chosen one of the most memorable nights in the history of Burnden Park as a curtain raiser to the Reebok Classics series of DVDs that will be released over the coming months.
In fact, they could not have chosen a more fitting occasion - the night in April, 1997, when Wanderers beat Charlton Athletic 4-1 and the curtain came down on more than a century of football at Manchester Road.
"End of an Era" - the film of the match, the pre-match hype and the post-match emotions with analysis from Sam Allardyce and Frank Worthington - captures the excitement of Wanderers lifting the Division One Championship in that record-breaking season.
It shows how Colin Todd's Wanderers came from a goal behind to romp to victory with goals from Alan Thompson, Gerry Taggart and two from John McGinlay (who else?) to record such a fitting victory.
"End of an Era" is now on sale at £12.99 at the Wanderers Superstore, online at bwfc.co.uk and on the telephone orderline 0845 124 9828.
The five games that will be featured in the Reebok Classics series are: Wanderers 3 Arsenal 1, including Nicolas Anelka's Premiership double against his former club on November 25, 2006 (release date April 21); Wanderers 2 Middlesbrough 1, when Premiership safety was assured on May 11, 2003 (release date May 26); Wanderers 5 Crystal Palace 2, when the survival flame flickered on May 2, 1998 (release date June 30); Wanderers 2 Leicester 2, when nine-men came from two down to snatch a dramatic point on December 29, 2001 (release date July 28); and Wanderers 5 Aston Villa 2, when Jay-Jay Okocha inspired a magnificent Carling Cup semi-final triumph on January 21, 2004 (release date September 4).
