A lone gunman attempted to carry out a robbery at Standish Post Office at 11am today.
The man walked into the branch on Chorley Road with a small handgun and asked for money. He then left the scene, empty-handed, and ran in the direction of Devon Street.
Police have now reopened Chorley Road between Red Rock Lane and Rectory Lane after the incident.
A package that was left at the post office by the man is no longer being treated as suspicious.
The man is described as white with a grey pointy beard, in his 50's,wearing a 'deer stalker' type black hat, black gloves and blue jeans.
