ANCIENT Egypt came to life at Bolton Museum this week when a new exhibition opened.

"From a Modern Land. Ancient Egyptian textiles: Contemporary Paintings" includes rarely seen ancient artefacts alongside contemporary artworks inspired by them.

Bolton's valuable collection of archaeological textiles, the fruit of British excavations in Egypt, is one of the most significant in Europe.

But because they are so delicate the items are rarely displayed.

The exhibition is giving the public the chance to view the items alongside contemporary paintings by artist Ros Ford.

Ms Ford, whose work is based on images of contemporary life, ancient icons and Coptic textiles, has lived and worked in Egypt.

She said: "Working alongside museum staff has given me a deeper insight into the history and craft of the pieces."

The exhibition is open in the Egyptian Gallery at the museum in Le Mans Crescent until May 15.

Ros Ford will be giving a tour of the exhibition on Tuesday May 1 at 5.15pm. Opening times are Monday to Saturday, 9am-5pm and admission is free.
