THE crowning glory of the popular Westhoughton Carnival has been saved.

The town has hosted a carnival event for more than 40 years but the show committee, headed by three women pensioners, have all decided to retire. As a result, this year's summer show, a central feature of the carnival, has been cancelled.

But organisers of the annual carnival royalty event say they want to host a town fete and will keep up tradition and crown a carnival queen and other royalty. Sandra Greenall, who has co-organised the crowning for the past three years, said: "We're trying to keep the spirit of carnival going as best we can.

"The royalty is one of the most popular elements and perhaps people will get behind it and try to resurrect the whole event for next year."

Royalty selection will take place in April and the crowning is scheduled for August 5. To offer help or sponsorship contact Sandra on 07730 954944.
