TODAY we have the Red Bridge area of Bolton in the spotlight but something struck us here at Looking Back and perhaps our eagle-eyed, knowledgeable readers will know the answer.

Why is this area called Red Bridge and was there, actually, a red bridge in Breightmet?

The area appears to have an identity all of its own with local folk describing themselves as living in Red Bridge rather than Breightmet.

Perhaps you can provide information about Breightmet and its origins also. It is always interesting to learn more about Bolton and its past and, in particular, the various districts that make up the town.

In this photograph we can see the Red Bridge public house and a number 509 bus heading up the road with a row of cottages on the right.

The photograph was taken in 1984 but how much has this area changed over the ensuing 31 years? It seems a peaceful enough scene but it is still the same today?

If we have any local folk keen to talk about the Red Bridge and Breightmet areas we would love to hear from them — perhaps you lived in one of the little cottages we can see on the right.
