IT was a very happy Christmas for children and families in Bolton, when Santa and his elves handed out more than 500 gifts.

The gifts were donated as part of Bolton Lads and Girls Club's annual Christmas appeal to provide presents to children and young people.

The charity handed out more than 500 toys and gifts on Christmas Eve, including food hampers, as part of Operation Sleigh Bells.

A club van pulled the sleigh along, as Santa and his elves gave out presents to those who may not otherwise have received gifts.

Bolton Lads and Girls Club received significant support from local businesses such as Stanmore Insurance, AO.com, Miller Metcalfe, Stafford & Co and the radio stations Key 103 and Tower FM, all of whom collected and donated toys, gifts and food items.

Santa's elf Chloe Mitchell, who is also the club's PR and communications administrator, added: "We have had a great response from businesses. This has helped us spread the Christmas cheer all over Bolton and getting out on the streets helps bring it to life a bit more. "Bringing smiles to the faces of children is the best feeling there is."

Karen Edwards, chief executive of Bolton Lads and Girls Club, said: “Sadly for some of our members and their families Christmas can be a very difficult time of the year so we like to spread the Christmas magic to as many of our young people as possible.

"In addition we have lots of youngsters who deserve a special something for their contribution to the community.

"The generosity of local businesses has been fantastic and their efforts really will make a difference to young people and families across the town this Christmas.”

Father Christmas said: "I'm really excited about this. It's a great event and the best part of it is undoubtedly seeing the smiles on the faces of people when we give them their presents.

"It makes me realise how lucky some people are and how sometimes we can take things for granted.

"I'm also glad it hasn't rained, because I'm in my suit."
