Jesus Christ Superstar, Bolton Premier Productions, Albert Halls, Bolton
Written in 1970, this well-known musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice has seen several revivals.
The latest of which was in 2012 where we saw well-known names taking the lead roles for a sell-out arena tour.
This week, Bolton has its own well-known names and some new faces presenting a production of Jesus Christ Superstar that could grace any arena stage.
Jack Corrigan portrays the role of Judas, with a vocally challenging score, which Jack did full justice to - a great performance.
Tim Platt gives an excellent portrayal of Jesus with the right amount empathy and pathos. Tim has excellent stage presence and his vocal range is very impressive.
In the role of Mary is Hilary Brownson-Hardman, a caring compassionate portrayal and a wonderful performance of I Don't Know How to Love Him.
There are so many stunning solo vocal performances in this production, including: John Whitehead as Pilate; Joel Cheetham; Tony Whitehead and Chis Higson as Annas, Ciaphas and Priest respectively, Zack Thornley as Simon and David Hankinson as Peter.
A special mention must go to Ray Goodwin who plays the role of Herod and sings King Herod’s song in the style of Elvis. A great performance that had the near capacity audience clapping along.
All these great solo pieces were complemented by an amazing ensemble of Apostles and Followers of which every single one of them turns in a performance of the highest degree.
They are energetic, full of life and enthusiasm that spilled from the footlights into the audience with ease. Their rock style costumes look amazing, well-coordinated and very effective.
This powerful production has all the right ingredients to create a stunning piece of musical theatre.
Presented on an open stage with a very impressive set that incorporates a very impressive orchestra and was complemented by an excellent and imaginative lighting plot. The crucifixion scene is very moving.
Jesus Christ Superstar is an all-vocal production with no spoken word. Director Marje Brayshaw, along with musical director Andrew Saunders, have certainly worked hard to create a slick production that is both emotional and entertaining.
I was delighted to be invited backstage for a presentation from The National Operatic and Dramatic Society to Barbara Platt for a 50 years service to amateur theatre. It was lovely to see all the cast greet Barbara and share her special moment. Well done Barbara and congratulations.
Jesus Christ Superstar runs until Saturday. Don’t miss it!
