WESTHOUGHTON Lions Under-15s avenged an early-season home defeat to Leigh East with a comprehensive victory at Leigh Sports Village.
The Lions went 4-0 up when coaches’ player-of-the-match Matt Galvin pounced on a Leigh kick to touch down against the run of play.
East took control of the first half to score three unanswered tries to make the score 16-4 at the break.
Lions’ never-say-die attitude came to the fore in the second half, Matt Langhorne cutting the deficit when he followed up on a last tackle kick to claim his first of try of the game in style.
Dec Ali then stunned the home supporters with an expertly taken try again from a kick that was converted to make the score 16-14.
The Lions were now on a roll and the game was swinging their way when Langhorne scored the second of his brace of tries, his speed taking him under the posts.
Leading 20-16 once the extras were added, the Lions were roaring and put the icing on the cake when players’ player Nathan Reidy stormed through for an unconverted try in the closing stages.
The Lions Under-9s side deservedly beat Waterhead 24-12 with an impressive performance away from home.
The Lions opened the scoring with a great solo effort from man of the match Sam Dixon followed by another try by Cooper Bainbridge.
Lions got a crucial try on the stroke of half-time when Dan White forced his way over the line with a with a typically powerful run to make the score 12-0.
The Oldham side got their first try only for the Lions to hit back straightaway with Zak Taylor scoring fter a jinking run.
Then Ben Grindley-Roberts broke on the left edge and forced his way over near the corner flag.
Waterhead scored again then the Lions responded with the best try of the game. After a solid set they moved the ball from right to left with Sam Dixon, Josh Thompson and Ben Grindley-Roberts all moving the ball on after drawing a man, leaving Zak Taylor with clear field in front of him all the way to the try line.
Waterhead scored the last try, but the honours went to Westhoughton.
