RARE memorabilia from the Bolton Wanderers glory days of the 1920s is up for auction.
The collection belonged to the late Billy Jennings, who played left back for Wanderers in the golden decade they won the FA Cup three times.
The shirt worn by Jennings in the famous White Horse Final — in which they beat West Ham 2-0 in the new Wembley Stadium in 1923 — is one of the items up for grabs.
A gold hunter pocket watch, believed to have been awarded to members of the victorious team, is also on offer.
Another valuable souvenir is Jennings’ FA Cup winners’ medal he won when the Burnden Park side returned to Wembley to beat Manchester City 1-0 in 1926.
The auction is being run by Fraser’s Autographs at a sale which takes place in the Bloomsbury Auctions’ Mayfair sale room in London on Thursday, September 25.
The catalogue will be available online at frasersautographs.com or at bloomsbury auctions.com.
Fraser’s is also offering a free catalogue to the first 20 readers of The Bolton News to email ajenkinson@stanley gibbons.com.
According to Fraser’s, the items have been put up for sale by the Jennings’ family, who did not wish to comment.
Jennings was signed by Wanderers in 1912 and won 11 full international caps for Wales. He served in the Royal Flying Corps in World War One, but returned to the club to continue a career which was ravaged by injuries.
But he played in all seven of the FA Cup ties leading up to Wanderers’ 1923 victory.
He played his last game for the club in 1929 before retiring as a player in 1931 and becoming a coach at Notts County.
In 1937 he became manager of Cardiff and faced the job of rebuilding the team with little money after fire had destroyed the Ninian Park stand and offices.
He died in 1968.
