AN eight-week-old sausage dog had to be rescued by firefighters after she bit off more than she could chew.
Dachshund pup Winnie got her canines caught on her bed cage after getting excited on Monday morning, so new owner Terri Roach, who was still in her pyjamas, rushed her to the fire station.
The 24-year-old said: “We had just got up and in just a minute I think she got excited and got her jaw stuck, and starting yelping.
“I tried using pliers, but couldn’t free her, so drove her round to Atherton Fire Station and they were just brilliant. Within seconds they had freed her.
“They were so good. When she was free she was completely fine, her tail was wagging and she walked around looking at everyone probably thinking why are they were all looking at me.”
The puppy had only just moved into her new home on the Car Bank estate, Atherton.
Miss Roach said: “It was very worrying at the time. There were about eight to 10 firefighters around me and I was thinking I was still in my pyjamas. I had just dashed out without thinking.”
The dog was adopted as the family pet because Miss Roach’s sister, Callie, now aged nine, had always wanted one since seeing a ‘sausage’ dog on a children’s television programme.
Miss Roach, a travel consultant, said: “She is a typical pup, playful and always exploring, but I don’t think she will get into any more sticky situations.
“Callie was still at home when I brought her back and she saw Winnie was all right.”
Firefighters said Miss Roach turned up just before 8am asking for help.
Watch manager Simon Wood said: “The dog was shaking when she arrived, but we managed to free her within two minutes by cutting away at the cage where she had caught her teeth.
“Once free she was completely fine.”
