WHITE hot Bolton Wanderers legends took on Daisy Hill Vets at a charity football match to raise money to help the causes of three local families.
John McGinlay, Alan Stubbs, David Lee, Tony Kelly, Keith Branagan, Mark Winstanley, Nicky Spooner, Neil Fisher and Gavin McCann made up the Super White Hot Team which beat the Vets 3 — 1.
Organised by Mark Price, from Westhoughton, the event attracted more than 1,000 people to the Westhoughton-based football club.
The match raised money for the families of Rowena Darby, from Turton, who has terminal cancer, Corey Peyton, from Atherton, who was paralysed after a fall on holiday, and Amelia Morris, from Wigan, who has Tay Sach’s Disease.
Mrs Darby’s husband Phil joined his Whites heroes as a surprise and even scored the first goal.
The mum-of-one said: “It was a brilliant day with a really great turn-out. My husband Phil really enjoyed playing with some of his heroes.
"The money raised is just amazing and we're putting it towards my medication — I have many complimentary medicines which I take to support my chemo, but I pay for all these myself and it is pretty expensive.
“Specifically I want to be able to have an intensive vitamin C treatment but this will cost up to about £2,000 or slightly more.
"The money raised from the legends match will go a long way to helping me be able to have this treatment.”
Mr Price added: “It was a fantastic weekend and I’m really pleased that so many turned up to support such inspirational local families.”
