BOLTON School’s iconic buildings will once again take centre stage in BBC One’s hit romantic drama Last Tango in Halifax.
Actress Sarah Lancashire was back in Bolton and at the school filming for the third series of the award-winning drama over the summer break.
Red Production Company transformed the grade two listed buildings into a set for two days shortly after film crews had been shooting at Turton Tower for the new series to be shown in the coming months.
Sue Hincks, headmistress of Bolton School Girls’ Division, said: “We were delighted to offer Bolton School as a backdrop for the filming of the third series of Last Tango in Halifax.
“Whenever the school appears on the screen it always creates a positive buzz among our community and further afield as the building is such an iconic landmark.
“Having recently featured in Don't Tell the Bride too, the school is becoming quite a star.”
Headmaster of the Boys’ Division Philip Britton said: “It has been wonderful to receive emails from former pupils around the country and across the world proud to see their school looking so good on TV.”
Filming took place in the boys’ division great hall, the headmaster’s study, several classrooms, offices and corridors to represent the independent school where Sarah Lancashire’s character is head.
Some filming also took place outside the new Riley Sixth Form Centre, which opened in September 2013.
The first two series of Last Tango in Halifax, which follows the lives of two childhood sweethearts reunited after 60 years, have been a huge hit, leading to the programme winning the prestigious 2013 Drama BAFTA.
The third series will return to BBC One later this year. The school was also used as a backdrop in the 2007 critically acclaimed film The Mark of Cain, and during the 1990s for an episode of Hetty Wainthropp Investigates.
