GREEN-FINGERED Johnson Fold residents have been given a boost by Asda.
More than 50 families in Johnson Fold are being shown how to grow their own vegetables by staff from the supermarket in Moss Bank Way, Astley Bridge.
Christine Baldwin, community life champion at the store in Moss Bank Way, Astley Bridge, has been giving members of The Johnson Fold Action Group a hand over the past few weeks with weeding, building raised beds to plant vegetables and painting buildings for tools to be stored in.
The community group has been given £90 to buy tools and equipment by the store and was recently given £200 by Asda after being voted as the winner of the Chosen By You, Given By Us competition by customers, which aims to help community groups.
The Edible Estates was launched last October when the Johnson Fold Community Action Group was given use of a house on the estate.
Residents can go into the Montserrat Road house and learn how to grow their own food, then take a crate home so they can grow their own.
Anne Burns, west neighbourhood manager for Bolton at Home, said: “We wanted to develop a project aimed at food growing and the environment.
“It’s wonderful to see how the members of the group have embraced Edible Estates and are inspiring so many households to grow their own food.
“It’s a pleasure to support them and we appreciate all that they’re doing to take it forward.”
