AN under-10s football team has braved the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge — and then nominated the Bolton Wanderers first team squad.
The youngsters from Eagley FC lined up in front of a goal after playing on Sunday, before being pelted with icy water by their coaches.
The coaches quickly wrapped the boys in warm towels after the challenge, with the lads throwing down the gauntlet to Wanderers, Manchester United and Liverpool once they had dried off.
The team’s manager, Dawn Woolham, said the boys were relishing the challenge after they had beaten Exton Villa.
She said: “They had absolutely no problem with having a bucket of water thrown over them — those things come very naturally to young lads.
“They might have felt differently afterwards, as the water was very cold.
“They are a very close team of boys. A lot of them go to school together and we are very proud of them — they are a smashing little bunch of footballers.”
The ball is now in the court of Whites skipper Jay Spearing, Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard on whether they will take up the Eagley under-10s nomination.
Mrs Woolham said: “They are the three teams the boys support, “Can you imagine the stars saying thanks for the nomination from Eagley FC under-10s?
“How good would it be if one of these big clubs took notice of us and took up our challenge?”
Mrs Woolham added that the team likes to make a small contribution to charity each year, having supported Bolton Hospice in the past, and this was a good opportunity to continue this.
She said: “All the boys have put in £5 each and, hopefully, we will be able to raise £100.
“We were more than happy to do this as it gives something back.”
The boys who braved the soaking were Jack Needham, Kian Walton, Bradley Yates and Umar Khan, nephew of Bolton boxer Amir.
Joining them were Cole Bridge, Joel Burgess, Owen Marshall and Mrs Woolham’s sons, Ted and Max, who is in Eagley’s under-11s team.
