FLIXTON and Atherton clash tomorrow in a game which could potentially decide the destination of this year’s league title.
Long-time leaders Flixton are 11 points ahead of reigning champions Atherton, and with 13 points for a win this weekend’s game could be decisive.
There are four games remaining in this season’s race for top spot, and if the Manchester men win tomorrow it will almost certainly mean they will be picking up their first piece of silverware since they joined the league six years ago.
But Atherton are taking heart from Flixton’s history of slipping up when in good positions to win trophies.
“They have come second for three or four years now and it would be strange if they didn’t win it again,” said Atherton captain Paul Walsh.
“It wouldn’t be the end of the world if we didn’t win the league, we’re just having a bit of fun chasing them and having a bit of banter between the two clubs.
“It’s role reversal from last year when they were chasing us and we ended up winning it.
“They’re a good side and have been for a few years, but they haven’t won anything and it would be strange if it happened again.“ Atherton have shot up the table to second with a superb run of form.
Walsh, pictured, points to the improvement in form throughout the team, but particularly from overseas player Roshon Primus.
“He is a man possessed at the minute,” the skipper said.
“He’s only 18 and has come over from the West Indies. He took a bit of time to settle but he’s hit six 50s in his last seven knocks.
“And we have the best pro in the league in Jamar (Griffith).
“We’re just enjoying it. We got the 13 points when we appealed against Darcy Lever playing an ineligible player against us when they beat us and that’s what really moved us up the league. It made us think we could really put pressure on Flixton and tomorrow’s a must-win game.”
