A LOCAL veterans’ group has received a “treasure trove of memorabilia worthy of a museum”.
Malcolm Vickers, secretary of the newly-formed All Cap Badges, was speechless when he saw a couple’s contribution.
The haul was donated by Brian and Janette Hunter, following the death of Mrs Hunter’s father John Morton Carruthers.
They simply did not know what to do with his military collection.
The couple met Mr Vickers as he toured the North West with a historic militaria display depicting men from Lancashire on active service from the Boer War right up to the most recent conflicts.
While visiting Barrow-in-Furness – a catchment area for the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment – with a military display at a supermarket, he was approached by the Hunters.
Mr Vickers – a veteran of the 5th Battalion of the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment – was delighted to take the collection, which will now be displayed in Mr Carruthers’ memory. The 69-year-old from
Westhoughton said: “This collection is worthy of any museum.
“Not only are the display cases filled with rare items there are numerous folders and files which in themselves are a fantastic reference library.
“It really is a treasure trove.”
Special display boards and tables are being created to house the collection at various locations around the area.
Mr Vickers added: “It is obvious that John was totally dedicated to getting each detail right.
“There are reference books depicting each World War One battle.
“John’s daughter mentioned that he dad had been collecting items and information for more than 45 years.
“Even at a brief glance at the collection you can see that to be so.”
Any readers with cap badges or other items they would like to donate to the All Cap Badges
