DOUGIE Freedman went into ref rage after seeing his side slip to a home defeat against Middlesbrough.

The Wanderers boss criticised the performance of Staffordshire official Stephen Martin for failing to send off Boro defender Seb Hines for what he felt was a professional foul on Craig Davies in the first half.

Davies got up to score the penalty, later equalised by another spot kick from Grant Leadbitter after a handball by David Wheater.

Spanish striker Kike then scored the winner with 12 minutes left on the clock to leave the Whites third bottom in the Championship with one point from three games.

Freedman also disputed the referee’s decision to chalk off a Jermaine Beckford equaliser a minute from full-time for a push on defender George Friend.

The Scot admits his own side contributed to their own downfall both in their failure to convert a couple of good chances in the second half and in their lack of concentration in defence.

“I’m massively disappointed in a number of things tonight,” he said after the final whistle. “I’m disappointed in the manner of the goals we conceded.

“If we’re going to do anything, we need to make sure we don’t give away any prizes. That’s what we did.

“I was hugely disappointed with our penalty because I thought they should have had a man sent off.

“The referee was very, very poor tonight. I’m not a big criticiser of referees but sometimes I feel they need to hear my voice.

“If they go down to 10 men and it’s 1-0, it’s a game-changer.

“I thought our response was good in the second half, we had one or two opportunities, but the brutal truth is that if you don’t take one, you won’t win a game.

“I thought the referee was very poor and I don’t mind saying that – a couple of my players were poor too,” he said.

“Any physical contact seemed to be punished and if you watch Jermaine’s goal, as I have, he’s barely leaned on the guy. He dived.

“They won’t offer an explanation. That’s the life they live.”
