HORWICH completed a league and cup double with a 68-run victory against Westhoughton.

The star of the show was 13-year-old Jack Berry who took 5-14 in helping bowl out the St George’s Oval-based team for just 79.

Earlier in the day, Lancashire ace Tom Billington spearheaded the batting challenge with an impressive 82 and was only out in the last over.

Horwich managed to notch up 148-4 in their allotted overs.

The victory was even sweeter for Horwich after Westhoughton beat them earlier this season by three runs in the Lancashire Knockout competition.

Club secretary Stuart Leigh said: “It was a fitting end to round off the season by managing to get the double by beating our closest rivals.

“Most of them are playing second-team cricket already and it might mean next year we can field an under-18 side because some of them will be needing to move up from u15s.

“They are a great bunch of lads and to see them progess is fantastic.

“We have even seen some of them going to first-team cricket. Marcus Haydock made his first-team debut on Saturday keeping wicket and he is only 14 so he could be playing for us next season.”

Horwich batted first, setting a total of 148 with the wickets shared out among Ben Harrison, Jordan Higham and William Capstick.

Westhoughton’s Higham was the top scorer but was run out for 18.
