A HUSBAND has admitted knifing his estranged wife outside a Farnworth school.
William Berry repeatedly stabbed the 52-year-old woman shortly after she left St James’ School in Farnworth, where she works as a catering assistant.
Berry is believed to have waited for his wife to finish work and attacked her at about 2.40pm in Highfield Road near the school.
The 50-year-old, who has disabilities and was driving a mobility scooter at the time of the incident, also suffered injuries after, it is alleged, he turned the knife on himself following the attack.
The woman staggered to a colleague’s home for help after the terrifying ordeal.
An air ambulance was called to the scene along with an ambulance and police and the area was cordoned off for several hours while police combed the scene.
Both Berry and his wife were taken to hospital but neither suffered life-threatening injuries.
No children at the school witnessed the incident in October last year — but the school offered counselling services to pupils.
Berry had been charged with attempted murder but he has since pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
He will be sentenced on October 8 at Manchester City Magistrates Court, where the hearing is being held because of Berry’s disabilities.
