YOUNGSTERS at a Bolton school pulled out all the stops to offer a fitting tribute to the centenary commemorations of World War One.
A performance at St William of York RC Primary School attended by staff, parents, members of the clergy and the Mayor of Bolton Cllr Martin Donaghy, brought to an end weeks of planning by pupils and their teachers.
A Flanders field of poppies was displayed on the school’s hall ceiling and a mock field hospital was set-up alongside constructed trenches.
Children sang, danced and performed comedy sketches and there were guest speakers, including members of the British Legion and the Gallipoli organisation as well as the Director of Education for the Salford Diocese.
Children at the school in Nugent Road, Great Lever, have been learning about the importance of remembering the Great War through a curriculum of drama, dancing, writing, humour and prayer.
Deputy head Ruth Vayro said: “It was an extremely moving event, it really was an amazing thing to see.
"The children were absolutely fantastic and the guest speakers really helped to emphasise the importance of commemorating the war.
"There were 150 people in attendance and the great thing was that it was a real community event — with guests, teachers, parents and children all enjoying the day.”
