BOLTON Wanderers’ record signing Johan Elmander was part of the Sweden squad that reached the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
Signing for Gary Megson’s Bolton in 2008 for £8million, the striker went on to play 116 games in his three-year spell before leaving on a free transfer in May 2011.
Elmander’s only World Cup finals experience saw him begin every game on the bench.
After a goalless draw with Trinidad and Tobago, the Swede came on as a substitute in a 1-0 victory over Paraguay.
He came on as a 75th-minute sub in the final group game against England in which his side twice came from behind to draw 2-2.
Sweden progressed in second place behind England but were eliminated in the last 16 with a 2-0 defeat to Germany.
Elmander has since played in 12 qualifying games scoring four goals but his country has not qualified for the last two finals.
He made his Sweden debut in 2002 and has won 78 caps and scored 20 goals.
Although he was known more for his workrate than goalscoring, Elmander’s most memorable moment in a Whties shirt was a stunning goal against Wolves in 2010.
He scored 28 goals for Wanderers before joining Galatasaray in 2011 and went out on loan to Norwich last year.
