FORMER Wanderers left-back Quinton Fortune was part of the South Africa squad that travelled to the 1998 and 2002 World Cups.
Fortune joined Bolton Wanderers in the summer of 2006 after being released from Manchester United.
In his one-year spell at the Reebok the South African made only seven appearances, although he was never on the losing side, helping Wanderers to five wins and two draws.
The 1998 World Cup in France came when Fortune was at Atletico Madrid and he started every game as South Africa finished third in a group that contained France, Denmark and Saudi Arabia.
A 3-0 defeat to hosts France followed by draws against Denmark and Saudi Arabia shattered their World Cup hopes.
But two months later Fortune joined Manchester United for £1.5million where he stayed until the move to Bolton.
South Africa had similar luck at the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan where again Fortune did not miss a match.
In the opening game Fortune scored from the spot in added time to rescue a point against Paraguay.
A 1-0 victory over Slovenia followed by a narrow 3-2 loss to Spain condemned South Africa to third place, missing out on qualification by means of goals scored – one goal less than Paraguay.
Fortune retired from international football in 2005 after making 46 appearances and scoring two goals.
He later retired from all forms of football in 2010 after a spell with Doncaster Rovers.
